GENERAL:

The Planet of the Grapes is an educational wine shop. We are dedicated wine classes and wine tasting as the primary means for teaching others about the wide world of fine wine. Classes and Tastings are social, educational, and fun -- and In truth, the only way to learn about wine, is to taste wine, again and again. Our intro series of classes has been designed to introduce to wine -- by tasting wine, discussing wine, and developing both an understanding and an appreciation of wine...in three enjoyable classes. The classes can be taken in any order, as a set, or as stand-alone classes. We repeat the classes at least twice a year so everyone who wishes will have an opportunity to attend. Consult the Calendar of Events for scheduled dates.

INTRO I:

Entry level introduction to the world of fine wine. The class includes an overview of wine tasting. The Classic Varietals are discussed and tasted for comparison and contrast. Three whites and three reds are included. We review the fundamental characteristics of wine, how wine is made, as well as the common wine issues, from corks, to storage and serving. Finally, we discuss in general terms, the basics of food and wine pairing. The class is informal, casual and informative, and includes a great deal of Q and A. Cheese, fruit, and bread are provided in each class.

INTRO II:

Entry level introduction to the world of fine wine, part two. This class is dedicated to the Important Varietals -- six grape varieties (or blends) beyond the classics -- that are often listed on a restaurant menu. Participants learn to recognize the most basic characteristics of wine by tasting and evaluating each glass. The primary wine producing regions of the world are discussed, including the primary wines produced in each region. The fermentation process is discussed including the use of oak for storage -- and the impact of this upon the wine. Finally, we continue the discussion of food and wine pairing as related to the Important Varietals.

INTRO III:

Entry level introduction to the world of wine, part three. The final introductory class includes wines that are off-the-beaten-path -- Blends and varietals that are less common but that regularly offer great value to customers-- who know where to find them. Often quite distinct in aroma and flavor, each wine is tasted and evaluated for comparison and contrast. Food and wine pairing is discussed for each selection. Students are introduced to some of the basic history of wine, including the Phylloxera devastation experienced world wide in the wine industry. Botrytis wine is briefly discussed and a sample is tasted and reviewed for common characteristics.
